Recipe Scaling Calculator
Make the number of servings you need. Paste your ingredient list and scale the quantities up or down.
Your scaled ingredients will appear here.
How to scale a recipe
- Enter how many servings the original recipe makes and how many you want.
- Paste the ingredients with a quantity at the start of each line. For example, enter 1 1/2 cups flour.
- Select Scale recipe. Check any marked lines, then print or download the adjusted ingredient list.
Scale factor = servings you want ÷ original servings
New quantity = original quantity × scale factor
Going from four servings to six gives a factor of 1.5. In an illustrative ingredient list, 500 g chicken becomes 750 g, 200 g dry rice becomes 300 g, and 1 tablespoon of oil becomes 1 1/2 tablespoons. This demonstrates the calculation; it is not a tested recipe.
Check these before you cook
Ingredient quantities scale mathematically. Oven temperature, cooking time and pan dimensions need their own judgement. Keep the original recipe instructions and check the food as it cooks. Baking recipes and large batches may need more adjustment than multiplying every amount.
If the result calls for part of an egg, lightly beat the egg and weigh the share you need. Keep unmeasured additions such as salt to taste separate. Lines without a usable quantity, including ranges like 1–2 teaspoons, stay unchanged and are marked for you to check.
Keep the recipe’s measuring system
A line entered as 1 US cup stays in US cups after scaling; the tool changes the quantity, not the unit. Keep any US, metric or Imperial label with the ingredient. If the recipe only says “cup”, check its measuring system before using a converter. The same cup volume can also weigh differently for different ingredients.
Recipe scaling questions
Can I halve or double a recipe?
Yes. To halve a recipe that serves four, enter four original servings and two wanted servings. To double it, enter four and eight. The original ingredient list stays in the input box.
Will this convert cups to grams?
The scaler keeps each ingredient’s original unit. Use the Cooking Measurement Converter if you also need to change units. Cups to grams need a matching ingredient because foods have different densities.
What happens to fractions and ranges?
Simple fractions and mixed numbers are calculated, including 1/2, 1 1/2 and ½. Results use common fractions where possible, otherwise up to six decimal places. A line starting with a range, such as 1–2 tsp salt, is left unchanged and marked. Replace the range with one quantity if you want it scaled.
Does doubling the ingredients double calories per serving?
If you double every ingredient and double the number of equal servings, nutrition per serving stays approximately the same. This scaler does not calculate nutrition. Use the Recipe Nutrition Calculator with your final ingredient weights for an estimate.
Are my ingredients saved?
The scaler processes your list in this browser tab and does not save it. Download or print the result before leaving. Site cookies and analytics are covered in our Privacy Policy.
